Jose Mourinnho has told an Italian newspaper that he is "not looking for a club" but that clubs are "seeking me".

The former Chelsea manager has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United since being sacked by the Blues on 17 December, just six months after leading them to their first Premier League title in five years.

Mourinho is the odds-on favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal who is under immense pressure following poor defeats against Midtjylland and Sunderland; United are fifth in the Premier League, six points off the fourth Champions League spot.

The Portuguese is due in Italy this weekend as a guest of Internazionale president Massimo Morrati to watch the side face Sampdoria at the San Siro. Mourinho won the treble with Inter in 2010 and has been linked with a return to the club, although that is something he has denied.

In quotes [translated and edited] run by Italian newspaper La Stampa, Mourinho says: "My next club?

"I really do not know, but one thing is certain: I love football and I will return on the field with the same passion and ambition as always. Right now I have respect for every coach and every club. I'm not looking for a club, are the clubs who seek me."

Mourinho has not spoken publicly about the Manchester United job as he is friends with Van Gaal, having worked under the Dutchman at Barcelona. He is privately known to have a great desire to manage at Old Trafford, however.

"I'll be one day in Milan," Mourinho had earlier said.

"I am grateful to the president Massimo Moratti. I left Inter in 2010 and since then I have worked hard at Real Madrid and Chelsea. It has always been difficult to find a time to have lunch with the Moratti family. We agreed to see each other a couple of weeks ago.

"After going together for lunch, we will go to the San Siro bringing with us the spirit of Inter, with the hope and happiness to see Inter win."

"For me it will be a great emotion, San Siro, Inter fans. But one thing I want to clarify, I will not be leading the next season. Inter have a project that is Erick Thohir and Roberto Mancini. Ideas that full support and my wish is that the program of the president and technical concludes with great success. I want to see you smile again Inter and I hope that tomorrow everyone can smile again for the team's victory. "
