Michael Owen says Liverpool are genuine contenders for the Premier League title but is unconvinced by current table-toppers Arsenal, who could be let down by the 'inconsistent' Mesut Ozil.

Speaking to, the former Liverpool and Manchester United striker said that if Brendan Rodgers can recruit wisely during the January transfer window, the Reds could challenge for honours come May.

"Liverpool are fully deserving of being labelled title contenders," he said.

"The Reds are firmly back in the big time. The noises I am hearing are that Rodgers has money to spend this coming window and should he unearth another couple of gems, I certainly wouldn’t back against them lifting some silverware come May."

Arsenal have made the best start to the season and are currently two points ahead of Liverpool, however Owen is unconvinced that they will remain there.

"Despite people constantly telling me Mesut Ozil is world class, his inconsistency means that we only see occasional glimpses of real quality," he said. "His odd good performance is usually followed by half a dozen poor ones.

"Arsenal don't have the class of player to go toe to toe with the main title contenders".

The Gunners will play Chelsea on Monday night in a fixture which will have a significant influence on how the top of the table is shaping up.
