Loris Karius has lamented Liverpool’s lack of creativity during their goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night despite Jurgen Klopp opting to field his side’s ‘Fab Four’ from the start.

Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were all picked from the start for the first time since the 7-0 victory over Spartak Moscow in the Champions League but were unable to break down the Baggies’ stubborn defence.

Klopp’s decision to play all four was in part a response to the criticism he received after leaving Coutinho and Firmino on the bench in the Merseyside derby, but Karius admitted that the Reds found it tough to score against a team set up to sit back and defend.

“When West Brom come to Anfield we want to get three points, especially because the last game we dropped two when we should have won. It is very frustrating,” Karius said. “They did a good job, their game plan was probably just to sit back, but we could have done better in the first half, did a bit better in the second but it was not enough. We didn't create that much in general.

“You need to score a goal to make them have to score one so they open up and then it is a better game for us and more open.

“But when it is like this there is 11 men behind the ball but you still have to focus on the counter-attack and they are trying to get a free-kick or a corner. At least we kept a clean sheet, which is probably the only positive.”

Klopp has been rotating throughout a busy festive schedule in an attempt to manage injuries which derailed their season last year.

Karius rejected the notion that this policy of rotation was to blame for Liverpool’s recent results and believes that momentum will return to the club very soon.

“I think if you look at the starting XI that is pretty much a starting XI which has played together before,” he added. “It is not as if there are six new, young players coming in – we are all professionals and have played a bunch of games so there is no excuse. The manager picks the strongest team and the fittest one and I think it was a strong team.

“We have dropped points but we still believe in our ability. We did when we played well and we do when we drop points. It is a long season and there are so many game and so many points to get so I feel other teams will drop points.

“We saw it with Tottenham recently and the only team flying completely is City. I am still confident in us. We just have to focus on the next one and get the points there. There are still so many points to get.”
