Louis van Gaal appointed Manchester United manager: Roy Keane says David Moyes should have got more time but wishes Van Gaal well

Former United midfielder has his say on the new appointment

Roy Keane has given his backing to new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal and hopes the Dutchman will be given more time than his predecessor, David Moyes.

Moyes was sacked from his position as United boss after just ten months in April, with Van Gaal being named as his replacement recently.

Keane, who played for United nearly 500 times over a 12 year career, said he hopes that Van Gaal will do well as the new boss but expressed how he felt Moyes should have been given more time.

"I thought David Moyes was a good choice and I felt he maybe should have got a bit more time," Keane said.

"Van Gaal is obviously a vastly experienced manager. He has worked at big clubs, Bayern, Barcelona, he’s been involved with national teams before, so fingers crossed he’ll come in and do the business.

"Different managers have different styles and different character traits. I have heard that [he is a disciplinarian] before. He is pretty strict in terms of time keeping and stuff like that. But listen, if you can’t be on time for work, there’s something drastically wrong.

"Fingers crossed he’ll come in and United give him all the baking and support that he needs and hopefully he’ll get a lot more time than David Moyes was given."

Van Gaal will take up his role as manager at Old Trafford after his commitments with the Dutch national side are seen through at the World Cup.
