Luis Suarez wins PFA Player of the Year: Liverpool striker and his wife send thank you video to fans for support
Suarez picked up the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday night and posted a video to thanks the club, staff, team-mates and his fans for helping him win the gong
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez may have been frustrated in front of goal in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, but the Uruguayan was all smiles by the end of the day as he picked up the PFA Player of the Year award.
Suarez has scored 30 goals this season that has lifted Liverpool from seventh place last season to title contenders with just two matches left to play. Having missed the first six league matches of the season due to his biting incident with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, Suarez has completed a remarkable turnaround to pick up the award – an achievement that nobody would have predicted this time last year.
Having picked up his trophy at the PFA Awards night at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Suarez returned home to post a video on his YouTube page alongside his wife Sophie.
Speaking in Spanish, Suarez said: “Hello everyone. We’ve just got back from the Player of the Year awards. I’m really happy.
“Thanks to all the players who voted for me and to my team-mates, who I wouldn’t have won this prize without.
“Above all, I want to thank my wife Sophie, who has been enjoying the evening with me.
“And to my two children Delfina and Benjamin, who I love with all my soul. And to all my fans too.”
His short video came after his acceptance speech at the award gala, in which he was quick to credit his team-mates at Liverpool, and believes that without them he wouldn’t have won the award.
“The Premier League is full of really great players and so it is a great honour when these players recognise your work on the pitch,” he said.
“I always try my best for the team and it is nice to get awards but really this is for my team-mates and the staff at Liverpool because without their help I wouldn't have this prize.”
