Man-for-man marking: United and Chelsea

Manchester Utd

Edwin van der Sar

Some excellent saves when Chelsea threatened from distance, on his penultimate game at Old Trafford. 7/10

John O'Shea

Reliable as ever. Restricted both Florent Malouda and Ashley Cole. Did not get forward, but thanks to his team-mates he did not need to. 7

Nemanja Vidic

One of the league's few defenders who can match Didier Drogba for size and strength, he was resolute in the air. Took his goal with power and purpose. 8

Rio Ferdinand

Some very important headers from his penalty area. Has been in these situations enough times before and was as calm as he ought to have been. 7

Fabio Da Silva

Important overlapping beyond Park, who played fairly narrowly for a nominal winger. Very few defensive issues. 7

Luis Antonio Valencia

Asserted himself as one of the league's finest wingers, confusing Cole throughout with his movement and picking out the right passes and crosses. 8

Michael Carrick

Currently in his best run of form since 2009. Was expert in sweeping up in front of his back four and brisk and assertive distributing to the forwards. 7

Ryan Giggs

It was his shuffle and cross that set up Vidic's goal. Passed and moved with intelligence all afternoon, playing himself towards a 12th league title. 8

Park Ji-sung

Tireless, endless running up and down the left flank. His pass to Hernandez made United's first but after that he was excellent across the pitch. 9

Wayne Rooney

United's control of the flow of play owed as much to him as to anyone. His passing from deep was exceptional, switching the play to the flanks. 7

Javier Hernandez

Effectively won the title within 40 seconds, racing on to Park's pass, beyond David Luiz, to finish past Petr Cech. Could have scored more later on but continued to move smartly. 8

Best off the bench

Jonny Evans

Played the whole second half with calm and glimpses of real quality. 7

Chris Smalling

Two comfortable minutes in defence. 6

Petr Cech

Important first-half saves to make aside from the goals. The best was diving to his right from Wayne Rooney but there was another from Park. 7/10

Branislav Ivanovic

Allowed Nemanja Vidic to run in front of him for United's second goal. Might well have been sent off after a string of first-half fouls on Rooney, the first of which he was booked for. 4

David Luiz

Allowed Javier Hernandez to escape from him for United's first goal. After that he was unsettled by the Mexican's pace and was withdrawn for Alex at the interval. 4

John Terry

Some of his characteristic bravery but he struggled, as he did in the Champions League games, with the movement of Rooney and Hernandez. 6

Ashley Cole

Struggled more with Valencia than he does with almost any other winger and was prevented from providing the useful width he usually gives Chelsea. 5

John Obi Mikel

Tasked with the tracking of Wayne Rooney but failed to do so as United flourished. Withdrawn at half-time. 5

Michael Essien

Tidy enough on the ball but this game was further evidence of his lost powers: lacks the energy that made his name. 4

Frank Lampard

Like Essien, failed to use his experience to drive the Chelsea midfield into a position of strength. His second-half goal was a consolation. 5

Salomon Kalou

Very little impact on the game. Was replaced soon after an hour. 4

Florent Malouda

A few nice touches but O'Shea restricted his ability to deliver anything more than hopeful crosses. 5

Didier Drogba

Worked hard, and caused more problems than Torres would have, but could not batter his way through. Booked. 7

Best off the bench

Came on for Luiz at half-time. Made a crucial block from Rooney. 7

More running but lacked finesse. 5

Could not swing the title away from United in his 30-minute appearance. 4
