Manchester City title bid: How 100-goal City can become the highest scorers in Premier League history

Pellegrini's side are chasing Chelsea's record from 2009/10

Manuel Pellegrini's free-scoring Manchester City have all but secured the Premier League title now, after their 4-0 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

With their vastly superior goal difference, City could win the title with a draw at home against West Ham on the final day on Sunday, regardless if Liverpool defeat Newcastle United.

But City could add icing to the cake by becoming the highest-ever scorers in a Premier League season. They have currently scored 100 goals in the division this season, and are only the second team in history to score a century of Premier League goals in a season. The only other team was Chelsea - who powered to the title after scoring 103 goals in 2009/10.

Four goals against Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and City will break the record for most goals scored by a team in a Premier League season.

Most goals by a single team in a Premier League season

103 Chelsea (2009/10)

100 Man City  (2013/14)

99 Liverpool (2013/14)

97 Man Utd (1999/2000)

Of course, there could yet be a sting in the tail. Should Liverpool, on 99 goals, thrash Newcastle and City lose, they could still both win the league and break the scoring record too.
