Manchester City v Manchester United: Man for man marking

The Etihad Stadium

Manchester City

Joe Hart Distribution was erratic but probably stemmed from boredom at having nothing to do. 6

Pablo Zabaleta Dangerous going forward on the overlap providing vital width to help prise United open. A real threat. 8

Vincent Kompany Scored the vital goal and usual composed presence in the defence. Harshly booked for first-half foul on Rooney. 8

Joleon Lescott Shackled Rooney and assured presence alongside Kompany. Unperturbed by Welbeck's arrival as United searched for an equaliser. 7

Gaël Clichy Dealt with Nani and kept composure as United threw on winger after winger to save the game. 7

David Silva Eluded United's midfielders on several occasions but did not run the show as Mancini would have liked. 6

Yaya Touré Rarely ventured forward until late on in a performance epitomising discipline aside from a childlike strop when booked for throwing the ball. 7

Gareth Barry Helped win the midfield battle and cut off central supply line to Rooney. Quietly efficient in possession, as is his style. 7

Samir Nasri City's most dangerous threat for large parts of the game. Showed Arsenal colours when electing not to shoot six yards out at the death. 7

Carlos Tevez Turned United's defence nicely on a few occasions but failed to make a telling impact. 6

Sergio Aguero Worked hard. Skied difficult volley from tight angle before scuffing another half-chance. Never shied away and always troublesome. 7

Manchester United

David De Gea Kompany's goal not his fault but close-range finish suggests he could have done more to claim the cross. Saved from Clichy late on. 5

Phil Jones Rarely crossed the halfway line until the second half but poor delivery thereafter suggested he shouldn't have bothered. 5

Chris Smalling Badly at fault in losing Kompany for City's winner. When your team adopts a containment strategy, such errors are fatal. 4

Rio Ferdinand Confident and composed for the most part, United's defence faltered around him. But should he have been marking Kompany instead? 5

Patrice Evra Looked vulnerable most times as City attacked down the left. Had little cover but lost battle with Nasri and booked for fouling Zabaleta 5

Nani Saw plenty of the ball but could not produce anything of note. More Bad than Thriller from the Michael Jackson lookalike. 4

Michael Carrick Lost battle of midfield anchors. Did nothing wrong but equally nothing of note. 6

Paul Scholes Typically intelligent in possession but unable to create any attacking rhythm. Gradually faded as Touré's power told. 6

Ryan Giggs Assured presence but drifted infield too often to allow Zabaleta space to attack Evra down United's left. Provided little. 5

Park Ji-sung Selected to break up play and help contain City's midfield but failed in his task. 5

Wayne Rooney Isolated figure more interested in trying to get Kompany sent off than influence the game. 5
