Manchester City vs Southampton team news: Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany return in new formation
Guardiola has shifted to a 3-1-5-1 formation
Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany have been recalled to the Manchester City line up as Pep Guardiola shifts to a 3-1-5-1 formation for the visit of Southampton.
Aguero was dropped for midweek Champions League game with Barcelona, while Kompany, who takes the armband, was not involved in the squad despite being fit.
Kompany is joined by John Stones and Aleksandar Kolarov as part of a back three, who are shielded by Fernandinho.
Leroy Sane makes his first Premier League start for City since completing a £40m move from Schalke and will play in a wing-back role with Raheem Sterling doing the same on the other flank.
Southampton are without Ryan Bertrand, Matt Targett and Cedric Soares for the game at the Etihad with all three missing out through injury, but Nathan Redmond returns after missing the game against Inter Milan.
With Bertrand and Targett out, Sam McQueen starts at left-back for Saints as Ronald Koeman makes five changes to the team that played at the San Siro in the Europa League tie this week.
