Manchester United 1 Tottenham 2: David Moyes labels referee Howard Webb's decisions 'scandalous' after Ashley Young penalty claim
Scot unhappy as Young is denied penalty after appearing to be taken out by Hugo Lloris and Adnan Januzaj is booked for diving
David Moyes said that Howard Webb’s refusal to give Ashley Young a penalty for Hugo Lloris’s injury-time lunge at the winger in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was “scandalous” and claimed that his team deserved to win the game.
The United manager was scathing of Webb for his decision on Young and his booking of Adnan Januzaj for diving. “Scandalous, it was a scandal,” he said of the Lloris challenge. “Anywhere else on the pitch if you follow through with your foot high it would be a sending-off.
“You couldn’t do that anywhere else. Goalkeeper comes out, Ashley Young gets the ball before him and he follows through. It’s an incredible decision that didn’t go our way. In fact, probably one of the worst that I saw.
“All I can tell you is that it was a stonewall penalty kick. If that isn’t given as a penalty kick, I don’t think we will get any more in the league this season.”
Moyes insisted United had “deserved to win”. He added: “We didn’t finish well enough in the first half, especially for the first 30 minutes. We got done on a couple of counter- attack goals.”
The Spurs manager, Tim Sherwood, said goalscorer Emmanuel Adebayor, who was carried off injured in the second half, had been crucial. “He’s got ice on every part of his body so we can’t tell what is wrong with him. He’ll get assessed. He’s been fantastic but they all did well.”
