Luke Shaw has been ruled out for between four and six weeks as the extent of his ankle ligament damage was revealed.

It was originally thought that the 19-year-old, who has impressed for Manchester United in recent weeks, would inly be out for around three weeks but a scan revealed he will definitely miss at least a month and maybe even six weeks.

The teenager suffered ligament damage in the 2-1 win over Arsenal and had to be withdrawn after just 16 minutes at the Emirates.

He has since been seen wearing a protective boot but the injury will come as a huge blow to Louis van Gaal who has endured multiple injuries all season, with as many as 12 first-team players out at one point.

However, there the gloom could be clearing at Old Trafford with Ander Herrera back and Jonny Evans set to have a late fitness test for the game against Hull, while Jesse Lingard, Radamel Falcao, Phil Jones, Rafael and Marcos Rojo all expected to be back before the busy Christmas period,

Evans, who played an hour for United's U21s earlier this week, bemoaned a string of "freak injuries".

He told the club website: "They're freak injuries and it's difficult from that point of view. It'd be nice to get settled in the team - everyone in the squad wants to get settled in their position as well."
