Manchester United news: Jose Mourinho could miss Arsenal game if given stadium ban

It would be Mourinho's second stadium ban in two seasons

Manchester United could face Arsenal without their manager Jose Mourinho, after he was sent to the stands against Burnley on Saturday.

Mourinho did not return to the Old Trafford dugout after half time following a confrontation with referee Mark Clattenburg, instead taking a seat in the stands with the crowd, before moving to the directors’ box a little later when he was told he couldn’t sit in the front row.

The former Chelsea boss allegedly questioned Clattenburg too hard over his decision not to award United a penalty after an incident involving Matteo Darmian and Jon Flanagan.

Should he be punished with a stadium ban, it will be his second in two seasons, meaning he would be absent for two of United’s games, starting with the away match with Swansea this Sunday before the home match with Arsenal on November 19, after the international break.

Mourinho is already facing a charge for improper conduct for comments made about referee Anthony Taylor before the goalless draw with Liverpool two weeks ago, and now the FA must decide whether his latest misdemeanour is worthy of a repeat of the stadium ban he received while at Chelsea last season.

On that occasion, Mourinho missed the Blues’ defeat to Stoke last November and was made to watch the game from the team hotel, after confronting referee Jon Moss during a previous game at West Ham.

Should Mourinho miss the Arsenal game, it will also mean he will miss the opportunity to lock horns again with Arsene Wenger, with the pair having a bitter rivalry over the years.

The feud began in 2005 when Wenger hit out at Chelsea over their lack of homegrown players and Mourinho’s tactics before culminating in a shoving match on the touchline between the pair in 2014.

Mourinho has until 6pm on Monday to respond to the current charges against him.
