Manchester United pre-season tour: Wayne Rooney admits 'everyone wants to impress Louis van Gaal'

Van Gaal is leading United on a tour of the United States where he is already impressing the likes of Rooney and Juan Mata

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has not been in his position for a week, but he has already made a good impression on Wayne Rooney.

Van Gaal will take charge of his first game as United boss on Wednesday when the Red Devils face the Los Angeles Galaxy in Pasadena.

After taking Holland to the last four of the World Cup, Van Gaal was only able to assume his position at Old Trafford last Wednesday.

The squad then flew to California on Friday and they have since been undertaking double-training sessions to get them back to full fitness ahead of the new season.

Rooney has been impressed by what he has seen of the new manager so far.

"It's been good meeting the manager and the new coaching staff. The first couple of training sessions have been good and everyone is looking forward to getting the games under way," Rooney said.

"We've got a new manager with different ideas - we have to train well and listen to what he wants us to do and take that onto the pitch and show him what we can do."

The new United boss wants to streamline his squad by the start of the season and, although it would be a huge shock if he decided to dispense with Rooney, the striker still has a lot to prove to the Dutchman.

After a lacklustre World Cup, Rooney will be determined to show he still has what it takes to cut it at the top level, and he will also be trying to stake his claim for the United captaincy, which is vacant following the departure of Nemanja Vidic.

"We have to go out there and show what we can do and show every day in training what different qualities we have as players and a team," the United striker told MUTV.

"Everyone wants to impress a new manager and that's what we're aiming to do."

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has left the four-match tour after just three days.

United insist Woodward has returned to the UK for "general business reasons", and not for any transfer dealings.

Meanwhile, United confirmed the £1.2million sale of left-back Patrice Evra to Juventus on Monday.

Further sales and signings are expected before the season begins in a month's time.
