New interim Manchester United manager Ryan Giggs recalled Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck for his first match in charge of the club after taking over from the sacked David Moyes, with both Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini left out of the match-day squad altogether.
The 40-year-old also chose to drop Juan Mata, United’s £37.1m January signing, to the bench as he with the England combination of Welbeck and Wayne Rooney, with Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield.
Giggs was able to name a strong bench with Chris Smalling, Mata, Nani and Javier Hernandez all available should the temporary manager feel the need to use them. He did however, resist the urge to include himself, as the player-manager left himself out of the 18-man squad.
Norwich, who are under pressure to remain in the Premier League after their defeat to Liverpool last week, must get something out of one of their remaining three games to stand any chance of survival with Fulham breathing down their neck.
Misfiring striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel continues in attack, even though he hasn’t scored since the opening day of the seasib.
