Goals from Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof denied Burnley their first win over Manchester United at Old Trafford since 1962, as the hosts earned a comeback draw which saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winning run as interim manager come to an end.

In an uneventful first half Marcus Rashford really should have done better when he skewed wide while one-on-one with Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Things picked up immediately after the break and, when Andreas Pereira was caught in possession outside his own box, Jack Cork played in Ashley Barnes to rifle the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Now behind, the hosts were pressed out of their slumber and attacked with wave after wave of pressure, Heaton making several fine saves to deny Romelu Lukaku.

With a little under ten minutes to go, Ashley Westwood’s clipped ball was met by Chris Wood but the game was not done as United responded with a Pogba penalty and a Lindelof effort on the rebound in a frantic end to the game.

Solskjaer fails to break the record

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had the most remarkable of starts to his time in charge at United, with eight successive wins in all competitions.

Following a miserable end to their time under former manager Jose Mourinho, the players (and fans) all look rejuvenated and happy with the football they have been playing.

If United defeated Burnley, Solskjaer would have become the first man to begin his reign at a club with seven successive league victories, passing Pep Guardiola (Man City 2016) and Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea 2009) on six.

But in a lacklustre performance, where United went behind for the first time under Solskjaer, the Norwegian’s golden run came to an end, meaning he has to share the record.

It could have been much worse though, with Pogba and Lindelof’s late goals ensuring that he will wait another day for his first defeat in charge of United.

Maybe Lukaku should play down the right all the time

After his excellent performance against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Friday, providing the assists for both Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard’s goals, Lukaku made his first Premier League start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Burnley.

Despite his eight Premier League goals coming into the game on Tuesday evening, there has been the prevailing sense of a man who could be doing so much better if, like the rest of his players, he felt more at ease and comfortable in the surroundings created under the manager.

The Belgian forward played on the right on Friday in his excellent showing, creating space for Sanchez to roam in while also driving at his opposing man Sead Kolasinac at will. Tonight, he was back in the middle as the main target man and he struggled.

Substituted off after 66 minutes, Lukaku was ineffective against a resolute and organised Burnley back line that brought back memories of the visitors’ foundation for their seventh-place finish last season.

Barnes is the man

Burnley striker Barnes has seemingly recovered from a lean spell during the first-half of the season.

With his goal tonight, a superbly executed powerful strike into the top of the net, Barnes has now scored three league goals in his last seven starts, this compared to two in the first 17 games of the campaign.

Despite qualifying for Austria, who tried and failed to call-up the Burnley man in November as he did not possess an Austrian passport, Barnes has stated that he has not given up on his dream of one day playing for England. If he can keep this sort of form up then who knows, maybe his dreams will come true.

Heaton’s total recall continues

Tom Heaton admitted earlier this week that he was considering a move away from Turf Moor after Joe Hart’s arrival and Nick Pope’s form saw his game time greatly reduced, but he has returned to the side with a string of solid performances.

On Tuesday evening this continued as Heaton denied Lukaku in both halves with smart saves and provided a vocal point for the visitors backs to the wall defending on show.

Despite conceding two goals, Heaton really could not have done anything about either of them and he was unlucky to not be on the winning side after another good showing.
