Luke Shaw will fly back to Manchester today, the Manchester United left-back has confirmed on Instagram.

Shaw stayed behind following his side's 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven to receive treatment on the horrific double leg fracture he sustained in the game's first half.

The England international underwent surgery immediately after the Champions League opener on Tuesday night, followed by a second operation to close the wound on Friday.

Shaw wrote on Instagram: "I just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone at St Anna hospital for all the care and attention they have given me the last few days. Something I will never forget!

"Am pleased to be flying back to Manchester today so I can start my journey back onto the football pitch!"

The 20-year-old is expected to be out for at least six months with the injury, putting into doubt his involvement in England's Euro 2016 campaign.

Shaw has recently made the international left-back berth his own with some impressive displays for club and country.

Hector Moreno, the player whose hefty challenge led to the injury, has visited Shaw in hospital alongside PSV coach Philip Cocu. The Dutch club also sent flowers to Shaw's bedside.

Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager, must not choose between Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, and Ashley Young to replace Shaw in his side's back four.

“For us it is a big loss, because I said in advance it shall be the season of Luke Shaw, and now it is nearly finished already," the Dutchman said.

“It's not easy, we have to cope with it, but it is a big loss. Shaw is the line-up player and it is very difficult to replace him, certainly when he is such good shape.

“But we have, in Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ashley Young, good replacements.”
