Louis van Gaal has revealed that Manchester United's newest signing Marcos Rojo will not be available to play against Sunderland this weekend.

Rojo, 25, arrived from Sporting Lisbon earlier this week in a deal that sent Luis Nani back to his boyhood club.

But Rojo is yet to receive a work permit that will allow him to play in England meaning it will be too late for him to be registered in time for Sunday's clash at the Stadium of Light.

Despite abandoning his 3-5-2 formation just 45 minutes into the opening day defeat to Swansea last week, the Dutch manager seems set to return to the formation when he has the Argentine in his squad.

"'I think Marcos fits in the profile as a left central defender," he said in his pre-match press conference. "Also a left wing-back."

However his unavailability could see Van Gaal continue with 20-year-old Tyler Blackett and Ashley Young as his left wing-back.

Rojo said it was a "great honour" to finally be a Manchester United player.

"Thank you for the welcome, I’m very happy to be here at the biggest club in the world," Rojo told reporters.

"It’s a great honour and I’m very pleased to be here, I’ll do the best I can for the club. The transfer was a bit of a long and complicated process, but the most important thing is that I am here now, and I’m very happy."
