The 32-year-old has clinched a two-year deal at Boro after having his contract paid up by former club Chelsea and has set his sights on firing the Teessiders into the upper reaches of the table.

Coming just 24 hours after Mark Viduka was unveiled as the club's second signing of the week, Hasselbaink's arrival is being touted as the solution to the lack of goals which has cost Boro in recent years.

And the Dutchman, who has a proven track record in the Premiership with both Leeds and Chelsea, is ready to shake off the frustration of Claudio Ranieri's tinkering to prove himself all over again in the north-east.

"I still have a lot to achieve," he said.

"I have to prove myself here as well - I don't think I can live on things that I've done in the past.

"They would want me to do more or less the same or even better, so I'm going to be under pressure.

But that's what I like and I'm up for it.

I'm ready for the challenge.

"The arrivals of Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo at Chelsea last summer pitched the Dutchman and Eidur Gudjohnsen into a scrap for places, although ironically, the Blues often looked more dangerous with the two paired together.

However, Hasselbaink is looking to the future rather than the past as he contemplates a new start.

"What happened at Chelsea is in the past," he said.

"We don't need to talk about that.

"Chelsea is a very special club for me and I've got many friends there.

I left on good terms and I wish them the best.

"It was for me time to go, but I hope they will wish me the best as well, and I think so.

"When I play for Middlesbrough, I hope we go and beat them.

The only thing I can say is that I hope they do well, only not against Middlesbrough.

"I'm just happy and delighted to get this opportunity, happy to come and play for Middlesbrough and happy just to be one of the boys who are going to try to beat every opponent.

"I'm very excited and I want to start.

"The former Atletico Madrid striker will be 34 when his new deal expires, although he is not ruling out another chapter in his professional life as he looks to wring every last second out of his career.

"How I feel now, how my body feels, I don't think so," he said when asked if this would be his last move.

"I want to play football and I want to play as long as possible.

"We will see what will happen.

"In the meantime, Hasselbaink will set about the task of helping Boro build on last season's Carling Cup success, and like Viduka, believes they can make a real impact this season and maybe even threaten the top four.

"You definitely have to put some goals, where you want to go," he said.

"We definitely want to be in Europe and I think with the players already here and the players coming, it's a possibility to aim for that spot," he said.

"I think we can achieve that, definitely.

"Chief executive Keith Lamb has had a busy week, pushing through the deals which have brought Hasselbaink, Viduka and Michael Reiziger to the north-east, and he revealed there may still be more to come, and soon.

"It was our intention to try to settle our squad early this year and give them every opportunity to bed in, and that's what we've done," he said.

"I think there are a few little bits to finish off and then hopefully by the middle of next week, the squad will be fixed and they can concentrate on preparations for next season.

"Having recruited two strikers and a replacement for full-back Danny Mills, Bolo Zenden's future is one of the remaining outstanding issues, while the club has also been linked with England midfielder Owen Hargreaves and Newcastle's Gary Speed should Nicky Butt seal a move to St James' Park.
