Moyes plans to rebuild squad if troubles go on

By Ian Herbert

His future now pledged to Everton, David Moyes got down to the business yesterday of rediscovering the success which presently eludes him and vowed to rebuild his squad if they are unable to recapture the form of the past few years.

Deposited from two cup competitions and with just two wins all season to take into a match at the Emirates, Moyes is envious of what today's opponents possess. "I would one day like to be as stable as Arsenal – and Manchester United. They are in a different situation regarding finance, but the stability has helped them," he said.

"If we do not get things back to what they were last season we will have to start working on re-assembling another team for years to come. The facts show that clubs who make regular changes end up in trouble, including financial trouble.

"Now, we are not in financial trouble but we have trouble because we need another investor. We have never had much money, and that is the case at the moment. But everyone works really hard to get to the top. In the last few seasons we have given it a good go, and that is what we will do again."

Moyes first indicated in the aftermath of this month's Uefa Cup exit to Standard Liege in Belgium that he might "go back down the route" of signing from the lower leagues – as in the case of Tim Cahill, who came from Millwall – and thereby "rebuild" the side.

That being said, he would rather those discoveries he has already made in the lower leagues began to redeem themselves. The travails of Joleon Lescott, signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers, have been particularly perplexing this season.

But things may get worse before they get better. Moyes is without a suspended Cahill today, Segundo Castillo picked up a hamstring strain while away on international duty with Ecuador, while Phil Jagielka and Joseph Yobo are suffering from flu. Victor Anichebe and captain Phil Neville are also still recovering from hamstring problems and Leon Osman has a groin strain.
