Newcastle United, seeking a new manager following a dramatic climax to the season that saw the Magpies only secure Premier League survival on the final day of the season, have drawn up a four-man short-list that includes Patrick Vieira.
According to the BBC Mike Ashley's team have whittled down their options to replace John Carver.
Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Vieira is understood to be among the names on the list.
The Frenchman, who is currently the manager of City's Elite Development Squad, has never been in charge of a senior side.
Steve McClaren, who was approached in the closing stages of the season, is also a contender. The former England manager rejected the previous approach from St James' Park but has since been sacked as manager of Derby County which could dramatically alter his standpoint.
Former Lyon manager and Arsenal player Remi Garde is another candidate, according to the BBC.
Michael Laudrup could be the fourth having been strongly linked with the role.Reuse content
