The Southampton manager, Mauricio Pochettino, must hope referee Mark Clattenburg takes the same lenient line with him as Mike Dean took with Sir Alex Ferguson on Boxing Day, following their angry confrontation after the final whistle at Norwich on Saturday.

The Argentine, facing a relegation battle, marched on to the field to harangue Clattenburg over the penalty which threatened to deny his team a point – even though goalkeeper Artur Boruc had saved it – in stoppage time at the end of the goalless draw. A Football Association spokesman said the FA was "aware of the incident" but would wait for Clattenburg's observations before a decision was made.

However, even if Pochettino is let off, Southampton may still be in trouble for failing to control their players, some of whom jostled Clattenburg in the melee that followed his award of the penalty against Luke Shaw for a foul on the Norwich striker Grant Holt, whose spot-kick Boruc saved.
