Premier League fixtures 2016/17: When are they announced, what time and when does the new season begin?

All eyes in the football world are fixated on international football with the European Championship and Copa America currently unfolding, but this week will see a major reminder that the return of the Premier League is just around the corner.

The 2016/17 Premier League fixtures will be unveiled on Wednesday with recently crowned champions Leicester City discovering who they will kick off their defence against, along with the rest of the full season.

Manchester United fans will be eager to see who Jose Mourinho will begin his new reign at Old Trafford against, while Manchester City’s new manager Pep Guardiola will discover a similar fate – although the two are scheduled to go head-to-head in pre-season.

The fixture release will also reveal whether two regular trends continue in the form of Manchester United starting at home and Arsenal being given the go-ahead to open the season in north London at Tottenham’s expense, with Spurs not starting a new season at White Hart Lane since 2010.

Promoted sides Burnley, Middlesbrough and Hull City will also discover who they face on their return to the top flight, with both the Clarets and Tigers gaining an instant return after one season in the Championship while Boro will play in the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2009.

Wednesday 15 June at 9am.

When does the new season begin?

The 2016/17 Premier League season gets underway on Saturday 13 August, though while all 10 matches in the opening week will be unveiled at 3pm kick-offs, fixtures will be changed for television broadcasting. One match will be moved to the earlier time of 12.45pm to act as the curtain-raiser to te new campaign, with another match moved to fill the late slot on Saturday at 5.30pm. Two more matches will feature on Sunday at 1.30pm and 4pm, with one game wrapping up the action on Monday night at 8pm. There will also be 10 Friday night games next season, as part of the revised television package.

What about the rest of the Football League?

The fixtures for the Championship will not be released until Wednesday 22 June, again at 9am.

And in Scotland?

The full Scottish programme will be unveiled on Friday 17 June at 9am.
