England midfielder Michael Carrick, 26, yesterday signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United. Carrick emulates defenders Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown, who have committed their long-term futures to the new League champions.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Michael has been outstanding and it is great he will be a part of this squad for years to come."

Bolton have released Ivan Campo, Stelios Giannakopoulos and Andranik Teymourian but hope to persuade goal-keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to stay.

Jaaskelainen and the defender Ricardo Gardner's contracts expire at the end of June but the manager Gary Megson is hopeful of extending their stay at the Reebok. "Jussi and Ricardo have been excellent servants and are still very much part of my future plans," said Megson.
