Rebuilding will need time, warns Allardyce

By Damian Spellman

The Newcastle United manager, Sam Allardyce, has warned the club's fans he could not buy instant success even with £100m.

Allardyce, who became the sixth manager in less than 11 years at St James' Park when he took over last month, said: "Everyone wants instant success, but that is a recipe for disaster. In fact, the club has been a disaster in terms of success in the last 10 seasons, and if you want that, you aren't going to get that from me. There is too much to do to have instant success here, even if we spent £100m.

"We have to put in completely new ideas and a complete new structure behind the scenes and then you have to sell this to the players, which takes time."

Allardyce has made a positive start, persuading striker Mark Viduka to leave Middlesbrough and move north and reaching agreement with midfielder Joey Barton, pending a money wrangle, to join him.

Newcastle have a bid on the table for the Paris St Germain defender David Rozehnal and are pursuing Tal Ben Haim, Habib Beye and Sami Hyypia, while reports have linked the club with the Reading left-back Nicky Shorey.

However, Allardyce says he needs time to establish his vision. "My job relies on winning football matches at first-team level, so I will adjust everything accordingly to make sure every game we go out and play, I give myself enough time," he said. "The only time I will get is by winning football matches, not losing them."
