Ronald Koeman named Southampton manager: Saints appoint Dutch legend

Had been without a manager since Mauricio Pochettino went to Spurs

Southampton have named Ronald Koeman as their new manager.

The former Netherlands international has agreed to a three-year deal, taking over from Mauricio Pochettino who last month was announced as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager.

The 51-year-old resigned from Feyernoord last month after leading the club to second place in the Eredivisie. Koeman led the side to three consecutive top three finishes after arriving at the club in 2011.

As a manger, Koeman has won three league titles - two with Ajax and one with PSV - and the Copa del Rey with Valencia.

Koeman has appointed his brother Erwin as his assistant after he left his coaching role at RKC Waalwijk. Jan Kluitenberg will also join the staff, taking up the role of assistant first team coach/physical coach.

The Dutchman is facing a fight to keep the Southampton squad together with several players being linked with an exit from St Mary's.

Rickie Lambert has already joined Liverpool, while Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw are being chased by some of the Premier League's top clubs.

Jay Rodriguez, who scored 17 goals last season, is also being targeted.

Koeman enjoyed a brilliant playing career, winning eight League titles with Ajax, PSV and Barcelona, two European Cups - one with PSV and one with Barca - and eight other domestic cups.

He was also part of the brilliant Dutch team that won the 1988 European Championships. Koeman enjoyed a brilliant playing career, winning eight league titles, two European cups and the 1988 European Championships

"I am thrilled to be the manager of Southampton Football Club," Koeman said in a statement on the Southampton website.

"From my very first meeting with (executive director) Les Reed, I could see clearly that this was the right club for me. We share the same philosophy of football, and the same belief in how to develop the club.

"Southampton have a talented first-team squad, a world-class academy and the infrastructure to sustain success in the Premier League.  “The opportunity to continue the development of this famous football club was simply too good to turn down.

"I cannot wait to get started."
