Giggs announced his retirement from playing after he was appointed assistant manager to Louis van Gaal

Ryan Giggs today announced his retirement from playing football and he will now become Manchester United assistant coach under Louis Van Gaal.

Giggs made a record 963 appearances for United, as well as 64 for Wales.

The 40-year-old is the most decorated player in English football, having won 13 league titles,  four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, among a haul that amounts to 34 trophies.

Giggs' last appearance for United came as a replacement for youngster Tom Lawrence in the last 20 minutes of the 3-1 win over Hull on 6 May.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: "Ryan Giggs has been one of the greatest players ever to wear the red shirt of Manchester United.

"What he has achieved will never be equalled in the English game."
