Sergio Aguero vs Harry Kane vs Diego Costa: Who will win the battle to be Premier League top scorer?

ANALYSIS: The trio after battling for the golden boot

Sergio Agueuro and Harry Kane both scored at the weekend to boost their hopes of ending the season as the Premier League's top scorer.

The Manchester City and Tottenham strikers moved onto 20 for the campaign, one ahead of Chelsea's Diego Costa.

But which of the three will end the season with the most? We take a look at their respective form, remaining fixtures and their statistics for clues to the answer...

FORM

Sergio Aguero: Spells on the sidelines and taking time to get back up to pace have hit the Argentinean. After returning from a month out over Christmas, it took Aguero six matches to find the goal. He then experienced another rare barren patch, failing to score throughout March until bagging a brace in the 4-2 defeat to Manchester United. Those two goals were backed up another against West Ham at the weekend, suggesting he might be hitting form at just the right time.

Harry Kane: Harry Kane has been finding the back of the net for Tottenham on a regular basis all season but his late goal against Newcastle was his first in the league since a hat-trick against Leicester on March 21. It was his 30th for the season and he admitted afterwards he felt as though he had been stuck on 29 for an age.

Diego Costa: Costa started the season brilliantly following his summer switch from Atletico Madrid, scoring seven goals in his first four matches. However, the goals have been drying up, mainly because he hasn't been playing. But when he does, he tends to score. If Chelsea can get him fit for the final few games (which they may need to owing to injuries to their other options) then expect him to add to his tally.

FIXTURES

Sergio Aguero / Manchester City: Aston Villa (H), Tottenham (A), QPR (H), Swansea (A), Southampton (H)

Aguero will be relishing playing Tottenham - he scored all of Manchester City's goals in a 4-1 win over them earlier this season. He also bagged a brace against QPR and scored against Aston Villa. If in need of goals on the final day of the season, Aguero could be in trouble as the Saints currently have the best defensive record in the division.

Harry Kane / Tottenham: Southampton (A), Manchester City (H), Stoke (A), Hull (H), Everton (A)

Kane has not fared so well against the teams Spurs are still to play this season - notching just one against Tottenham's five opponents, which came against Hull. There's that tricky trip to St Mary's to contend with plus relatively sound defences amongst the other opponents to try and break through. Hull have the worst defence of all the teams still to play, but nine teams in the division have conceded an equal number or more than the Tigers.

Diego Costa / Chelsea: Arsenal (A), Leicester (A), Crystal Palace (H), Liverpool (H), West Brom (A), Sunderland (H)

This issue for Costa is how many of these fixtures he will actually play in. But Jose Mourinho has hinted the Spain international could play against Arsenal this weekend, plus Chelsea have one more match to play than their rivals. Costa has played against five of the six remaining teams already this season and scored against four of them. It was only against Sunderland he drew a blank.

SO THE WINNER WILL BE...

Whilst it's obviously impossible to say for sure, we do have some clues as to who will win the golden boot. Costa has the most impressive statistics, scoring more than the others when he plays. The Chelsea striker's issue is whether he will be fit. Aguero looks to be hitting some form and judging by how he performed earlier this season against the sides Manchester City still have to play, he should be confident of adding more. Analysis of Kane doesn't bode so well - but then this is the season of Harry Kane and the idea of him ending it as the Premier League's top scorer might just be the crowning moment to his incredible campaign.
