Newcastle United last night made a surprise swoop for Manchester City midfielder Antoine Sibierski for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old Frenchman moves to St James' Park on a one-year contract, after falling out of favour at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Sibierski spent three seasons with City and scored 11 goals in 92 appearances.

He is capable of playing in attack as well as midfield and before joining City he had spells with Lille, Auxerre, Nantes and Lens.

City made up for Sibierski's departure by completing a loan deal for United States winger DaMarcus Beasley.

City signed Beasley from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven on a season-long deal, and the 24-year-old has travelled from the Netherlands to England for a medical.

Beasley, who can play up front or on either flank, has so far earned 55 caps for his country.
