'The big one for us is Walsall away'

Dave Jones, whose Wolves side beat Newcastle United in the FA Cup thid round yesterday, called on his players to take their cup form into the Nationwide First Division and push for promotion to the Premiership.

He said: "All I can ask for is to play good football. When we reach our peak we can match anyone, but we have not done that enough this season. When it comes off, you are a good coach; when it does not, you are a bad one. Today everyone at the club, players and staff, deserved all they got.

But he added: "The big one for us now is next Saturday at Walsall away. We have got to reproduce that. They will be in tomorrow and we will keep them going and put this result to bed."

Jones has been under increasing pressure because of Wolves' poor form in the league which has seen them slip out of contention for the play-off places. He reflected: "Pressure comes with the job and I will take it and enjoy it every day. There are people worse off than me. I will get on with the job and try and do my best.

"What we haven't got is the level of consistency and we have not been taking our chances. What we have done is shown what we are capable of. If we had not been at our best today they would have turned us over. Everybody was fully committed and it showed in the goal-line clearances we made."

Knowing how precarious his position is at the moment, Jones added ruefully: "Today I'm a good coach and manager, the next time we lose I'll be a bad coach. This is the pressure in management and some people don't believe me but I enjoy every minute of it – I just enjoy it more when we are winning."
