Transfer news: Jose Mourinho stokes Wayne Rooney talk by questioning impact on England if he stays at Manchester United
Chelsea have made the striker their prime target this summer
Jose Mourinho has questioned the potential impact on England should Wayne Rooney remain at Manchester United.
The striker's future remains uncertain with the player offering no indication over whether he wishes to remain at Old Trafford.
Chelsea are ready and waiting to make a move and The Independent understands Mourinho has made the 26-year-old his number one target this summer.
The 'Special One' has now suggested that should Rooney remain at Manchester United, it could have implications for the national team.
"If Wayne is a second choice for Man United, then the national team will be affected," Mourinho told BBC Sport.
Rooney's frustrations are understood to be related to being played out of position and regularly substituted under Sir Alex Ferguson. Since the arrival of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa last summer, Rooney's place in the team is no longer guaranteed.
With the World Cup taking place next summer, any affect on his place in Roy Hodgson's England team will figure in Rooney's decision over his future.
