Manchester United are about to sign the Argentinian centre-half Gabriel Heinze for £6m after he successfully came through a medical yesterday.

The transfer has been rushed through by the United chief executive, David Gill, after he agreed a fee for Heinze with Paris St-Germain. The 26-year-old said farewell to his PSG team-mates and flew to Manchester for his medical before heading off to play for Argentina against Brazil in next Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.

Heinze's personal terms had already been agreed at an earlier meeting between Gill and the player's agent, Robert Rodriguez. The defender has already been ruled out of today's French Cup final against Chateauroux because he is on international duty but it is doubtful whether he would have played for PSG in case he picked up an injury before joining United.

The Argentinian was signed by PSG from Real Valladolid three years ago and was linked with Chelsea last season. PSG have accepted that Heinze will be moving on and have already spent some of the money from the sale in recruiting Sylvain Armand from Nantes.
