The Real Madrid coach Jose Antonio Camacho yesterday went public on two players he is interested in signing - but neither of them was the Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira.

The Gunners captain was named this week by re-elected Madrid president Florentino Perez as "the best in the world in his position", sparking speculation the Spanish giants may launch a £30m bid to sign him.

However, the Real coach named Porto's central defender Ricardo Carvalho and Roma's Brazilian international midfielder Emerson as two possible arrivals at the Bernabeu.

Camacho told the club's official website: "I am only the coach and I don't sign players but Carvalho and Emerson are names that are out there and that interest us.

"Emerson is player of outstanding quality. But I insist, we are going to be cautious because Madrid already have a great team. The only problem is that people seem to think Real will spend money without asking questions. Other clubs know that and when we come knocking on the door, they ask for double or treble of what they ask other clubs."

He also insisted that striker Fernando Morientes is to play for the club next season after spending last year on loan at Monaco. The Spanish forward has been linked with a possible money-plus-player deal for Vieira. "He has two years left on his contract and is a first-team player," said Camacho.

Vieira met his agent, Steve Kutner, in France last night on the way back from a holiday in America. Kutner said: "I had a private and personal meeting with Patrick but what was said will remain confidential.

"Although Patrick was on his way out of the country again he was not heading for Spain. He wants a few more days' rest."
