Wayne Rooney is expected to return for Manchester United's next match, away at Southampton on Monday night.

The club captain missed Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Stoke with a knee injury sustained when he collided with an advertising board in the match against Hull City last weekend.

Reports suggest Rooney declared himself ready to play in the midweek match against the Potters however the decision was taken to leave him out as a precaution.

The 29-year-old underwent a scan yesterday with the results understood to have proved positive.

Louis van Gaal is certain to usher him back into the side however for the testing match against Southampton. The clash at St Mary's will see the sides currently occupying third and fourth place in the Premier League table come together, with the south coast club leading the way by one point.

Whilst Manchester United have won their last four games, Southampton in contrast are without a win in three having won the previous five games in a row prior to their recent slump.
