Andre Schurrle transfer latest: Atletico Madrid interested in Schurrle, but Jose Mourinho wants to keep World Cup winner

Schurrle starred in a 'super-sub' role at the World Cup but Mourinho would rather sell another foreign player

Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in signing Chelsea’s World Cup winner Andre Schurrle, but Jose Mourinho does not want to lose the attacking midfielder who became a real force to reckon with towards the end of last season.

23-year-old Schurrle only joined the Blues last year and had average start to life in the Premier League, as he struggled to break into Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up despite making 30 league appearances.

Having seen Diego Costa and Filipe Luis head to Stamford Bridge from the Vicente Calderon, Atletico expressed an interest in signing Schurrle last week as they look to add to their La Liga-winning squad.

However, even though Mourinho will have to sell one player in order to satisfy his squad and meet the home-grown players quota, it’s believed that he would prefer to sell another foreign player and keep hold of Schurrle, who excelled at the World Cup.

Schurrle was deployed by Germany manager Joachim Low in a ‘super-sub’ role that saw him come off the bench in five of their seven matches, scoring against Algeria in the group stages and a brace in the 7-1 demolition of Brazil in the semi-finals.

When Christope Kramer suffered a nasty concussion after 30 minutes of the final, Loew called on Schurrle to fill the gap in the midfield before going on to lift the cup thanks to Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner.

He has already spoken of his happiness with Chelsea, and believes that this season they can beat Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.

“I want to win titles with Chelsea and we have an opportunity this season,” he told The Sun.

“I need to take the experience of this summer and make the next step at Chelsea, to step up and play a big role this season with the confidence I have.

“Right now, I feel so confident. I’m tired but feeling better and better.”
