Angel Di Maria's proposed move to PSG would slash the wage bill at Old Trafford and strengthen Manchester United's position as they push for more summer recruits.

The Argentina international is being seriously linked with a £43m switch to the French champions, despite only joining Manchester United from Real Madrid for £59.7m last summer.

Despite an initially promising start to his Old Trafford career, the 27-year-old struggled as the campaign went on and in the last three months of the season he was not a regular in the starting XI.

Allowing Di Maria to leave so soon after his high profile, British-transfer-record arrival would be embarrassing for Manchester United, however it could significantly help the club in their summer recruitment drive.

The departures of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and Nani this summer have saved the club huge sums already. With wages respectively of £265,000-a-week, £250,0000 and £110,000, their exits have saved the club around £30m-a-season. It's helped United to bring in Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian this summer but more arrivals are wanted.

Louis van Gaal is seeking a new striker in particular, with Wayne Rooney now the only proven regular goal scorer at the club. Edinson Cavani is on the club's radar whilst there remains interest in Harry Kane despite an awareness that prising him from Tottenham would be extremely difficult.

United's position would be strengthened financially if Di Maria were to leave the club, with the former Real Madrid player understood to be earning around £280,000-a-week. His exit would save the club nearly £15m-a-year.
