Louis van Gaal will allow Angel Di Maria to leave Manchester United if the winger wants to leave the club, according to reports.

The Dutch coach wants Di Maria to stay, but does not want any unhappy players in his squad, meaning he will be sold if the right deal is made, according to the Guardian.

The paper reports that Di Maria had a meeting with Van Gaal a few days ago where he told the Argentinian that he should have at least one more season in England.

However, Di Maria and his wife are not happy and could still leave Manchester, with Paris Saint-Germain the likely destination. If that were to happen then Van Gaal will likely use him as leverage for a move for striker Edinson Cavani.

United are short of strikers after not retaining Radamel Falcao, selling Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce and with Javier Hernandez likely to leave in the near future. The pre-season tour of the US has highlighted the need, with Wayne Rooney and James Wilson the only strikers to travel.

Cavani, 28, is also unhappy at having to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Uruguayan has an excellent goal record for PSG, with 56 goals in 96 matches, but has often had to play wide on the left.

Van Gaal expects Di Maria to meet up with the squad on 25 July but is not sure whether he will stay. Di Maria suffered from poor form and injury after a bright start to his United career following a British record move from Real Madrid, while his wife is unsettled in England after a burglary in January.

Di Maria did not start a match in the final two months of the season, except on the final day where he lasted just 23 minutes before coming off injured.
