Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal are 'working' on a transfer deal and that he's optimistic of signing someone before the close of the window.

The Gunners have had a quiet summer thus far, with Petr Cech the only significant arrival at the Emirates.

Wenger has always maintained that his priority was to hold his existing players together rather than make major signings, however it appears that the Gunners are trying to bring in a target before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday.

Asked about signing someone in the aftermath of Arsenal's 1-0 win at Newcastle, Wenger said:"We are out there and working on it and I'm optimistic."

The Frenchman added: "This kind of thing is very difficult to predict."

Wenger has for some time been hinting that a last minute deal might happen, saying earlier this month: "I am always confident that a last-minute situation or solution is available, because the transfer market is especially moving in the last four or five days."

Who it is Arsenal are working on is not clear. The Gunners have been linked with a number of targets this summer in a couple of distinct areas. In attack, where Arsenal look in need of reinforcements, Edinson Cavani, Karim Benzema, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Aleksandr Kokorin are those being most strongly tipped for a move to the Emirates.

There is also a need for more competition in the defensive midfield area. Sevilla player Grzegorz Krychowiak has been linked with a £21.2m move, as has Real Madrid youngster Lucas Silva.
