Lyon have told Arsenal they will have to pay £40m plus bonuses to sign striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to reports.

The French club set out their terms before Arsene Wenger moved for the 25-year-old with a bid of just £29.3m. Lyon have confirmed that the Gunners’ offer has been received and rejected.

But despite claims on Tuesday that the player is “irreplaceable”, it seems the French side are willing to do business over the £40m fee, the Daily Mirror claims.

Wenger has also responded to the statement made by Lyon yesterday which made public the Gunners’ £29.3m bid for Lacazette.

Speaking from America last night, Wenger said: "Lyon is responsible for their own statements.

"On the transfer front, I think the best [option] is always to keep as secret as possible. If we sign somebody, we will announce it. But I cannot tell you much more on that."

The Gunners have also reportedly widened their search for defensive reinforcements after Per Mertesacker was recently ruled out from the game for five months. The German picked up his injury in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Les on Friday and has been subsequently left out of Wenger’s squad for their pre-season tour of the US.

With reports suggesting that Mertesacker could be out until December, Arsenal will now step-up their search for a new-centre back – despite the recent signing of former Bolton man Rob Holding.

The Daily Mirror claims that the north London club have already added Shkodran Mustafi and Fabian Schar to their list of potential signings as Wenger looks to combat his defensive woes.

Valencia are currently short of money and would be likely to accept a reasonable offer for the experienced centre-back.

Arsenal have already got in touch with the player’s agent regarding a transfer and will make a move for the German once the Lacazette deal has been sorted.
