Jürgen Klopp's imminent departure as Borussia Dortmund head coach could have further ramification on their squad for next season after Arsenal were linked with a latest attempt to sign Marco Reus.

Klopp announced in a surprise press conference on Wednesday that he will leave the club at the end of the season after realising that he was no longer the best man for the job. Dortmund’s troubles in the Bundesliga this season sees them down in tenth position and out of the Champions League, while they face a difficult German Cup semi-final against reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Having being at the Dortmund helm since 2008, Klopp’s exit will bring a new dawn at the German club, although whether the highly-rated Reus will be part of that remains to be seen after Sky Sports linked the Gunners with a fresh bid to land him in the summer.

While links with Klopp moving to the Emirates anytime soon have been all but dismissed given Arsene Wenger’s desire to continue to the end of his current contract in 2017 at least, Reus could soon be on his way to Arsenal.

He appeared to end any speculation about his future when he signed a new contract in February, with interest coming from Manchester United and Real Madrid as well as the north London side.

But the pacey Germany international could yet be on the move, and with the belief that Arsenal tried and failed to land Reus last year, they could be tempted back into the market. Even with his new contract – which saw his £20m release clause raised significantly – the Gunners would be able to afford the 25-year-old given their financial firepower these days, having made their intent clear with the recent signings of Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez for a combined £77.5m.

However, Wenger has more pressing concerns to deal with first, as the reigning FA Cup holders look to continue their Cup run with this weekend’s semi-final against Reading at Wembley as well as the unlikely Premier League title challenge they’ve mounted in recent weeks. The club could also do with addressing their understrength defence as well as the doubts surrounding the defensive midfielder and goalkeeper scenario before turning attentions to another £30m-plus attacking midfielder.
