Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has reiterated his belief that Olivier Giroud is not good enough to lead a Premier League title challenge and has urged them to sign a new striker before the 1 September transfer deadline.

The Gunners continue to falter at the start of the season following a 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Monday night that leaves them with four points from nine. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott unable to fins the back of the net against the Reds, Arsenal’s problematic attack was once again highlighted, and it caught the eye of the club’s record goalscorers in Henry.

The former France international was a special guest in the Monday Night Football studio alongside Sky Sports regulars Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, and he wasted little time in getting stuck in to Giroud following the goalless draw.

“I think it is going to be a massive week,” said Henry. “Are they going to buy someone up front or in the middle of the park?

“They were missing a lot of players tonight, they still need a holding midfielder and they still need a striker. We have been saying it since the beginning of the season.”

With Per Mertesacker ill and Laurent Koscielny injured with a mild back strain, Arsenal were without both of their first-choice centre-backs and had to call on the unproven partnership of Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista. The former was far from convincing while both struggled to settle into the game in the first half, and it took a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Petr Cech to prevent the likes of Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho from breaking the deadlock.

“They are so close, Arsenal, they are not far away,” added Carragher. “But they've only signed the one player in Petr Cech who is a big improvement in goal, we saw that tonight.

“Why hasn't he bought that central midfield player? We say it is a big week but he has had this problem for three years, he is not all of a sudden going to wake up tomorrow morning and say 'I want this player'.”

The club are being linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, but a move for the forward remains a long way off and has only cropped up after Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema confirmed he will not be joining Arsenal this summer.

The Uruguay international has cropped up on the Arsenal radar over the past two seasons, but the club are yet to launch a serious move for the 28-year-old and Wenger has maintained that he is happy with his current strike options.
