Arturo Vidal transfer latest: Manchester United could be put off deal after Juventus ask for '£45m plus Nani'

Reports suggest United could turn attentions back to William Carvalho

Manchester United may have been put off a move to sign Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal after Juventus told club chiefs they would have to stump up a massive cash plus Nani deal to land the player.

It will take £45m plus Nani, according to Goal.com, to bring the 27-year-old to Old Trafford. Nani could be expected to fetch around £8-10m if he was sold elsewhere.

United are on the lookout for a new centre midfielder this summer with new boss Louis van Gaal a known admirer of Vidal, while reports in Italy state that United would be willing to bid around £40m.

However, the massive deal United transfer mogul Ed Woodward has been quoted will prove prohibitive because of the £60m already spent on bringing Southampton's Luke Shaw and Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera to Old Trafford.

The excessive price-tag could leave Manchester United chasing another target, Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho.

Earlier this week Sporting director Augusto Ignacio said the club were not under any pressure to sell the defensive midfielder, and United would have to meet his £37m release clause if they wanted to land his signature.

"It's not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price," Ignacio told the Portuguese club's official TV channel.

"We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives who will want to play as well.

"The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.

"It is not easy to negotiate for players - you need to be very shrewd - but Sporting have a president who knows how to negotiate with anyone and what is best for the club."
