Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert confirms sixth signing of the summer with acquisition of goalkeeper Jed Steer
Lambert has signed the 20-year-old from former club Norwich, with the England Under-19 international set to join on July 1
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has confirmed that Norwich goalkeeper Jed Steer will join the club once his current contract expires on July 1.
Steer will be Lambert’s sixth signing of the summer, having already brought in defenders Jores Okore and Antonio Luna, midfielders Keandro Bacuna and Aleksandar Tonev, and striker Nicklas Helenius.
The former Norwich boss is keen to strengthen all areas of his squad, with Steer set to compete with current first-choice keeper Brad Guzan and back-up Benji Siegrist, with Shay Given expected to leave the club as he seeks first-team football.
Lambert told the Aston Villa website: "Bringing in Jed will add to the goalkeeping department and helps with everybody pushing one another, learning from one another and making everyone better and wanting to improve.
"You want competition for places throughout the team, which is something we didn't have last season."
Steer has appeared for England at U16, U17 and U19 level, and the signing of the 20-year-old is not the first time Lambert has tapped into his old club’s resources, having added Scott Marshall, Michael Watts and Chris Lorkin to his backroom staff earlier this week.
