Liverpool have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Burnley striker Danny Ings that will see the England Under-21 international join the club when his contract expires on 1 July.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old since it was reported that he could elect not to renew his contract at Turf Moor and leave on a free transfer – although Liverpool will have to pay a compensation fee of around £6m given he is under the age of 24.

Tottenham had also shown interest last month, but as revealed by The Independent, Ings had no intention of moving to White Hart Lane which left Brendan Rodgers’ side in pole position to land his signature.

With Burnley suffering Premier League relegation, Ings confirmed that he would be leaving the club in order to play in the top flight, and the club confirmed on their official website on Monday morning that he will join once a medical has been completed.

“Liverpool FC are delighted to announce that they have agreed personal terms with Danny Ings and, subject to a medical, the striker will join the club on July 1 after his contract with Burnley has expired,” the club confirmed.

Despite the agreement with the player and his agent, Liverpool are yet to strike a deal with Burnley over the compensation fee. The Championship club issued a statement to confirm that they rejected an over from the Merseysiders, but will continue negotiations in the coming days.

"Burnley Football Club has rejected an offer made by Liverpool but will continue to have dialogue with the club in order to reach a resolution over the fee," said a Burnley statement.

Should a deal fail the be struck, the decision will go to an independent tribunal who will determine the fee.

Ings is Liverpool's second free transfer secured already this summer, with Manchester City midfielder James Milner set to move to Anfield once his contract expires on the same day.
