Danny Welbeck transfer: Tottenham emerge as favourites for Manchester United striker after Arsenal rule out bid

Welbeck has been linked with a loan move to White Hart Lane

Tottenham have emerged as the favourites to sign Manchester United outcast Danny Welbeck before the close of the transfer window on Monday, after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger denied any interest in the player.

United manager Louis van Gaal is reportedly prepared to sell Welbeck, with the England international not in his plans at Old Trafford.

Arsenal had been linked a move for Welbeck after the news emerged that Olivier Giroud will be out until the end of December at the earliest after suffering a broken tibia in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday.

Wenger, however, denied any interest in his post-match briefing after Arsenal's 1-0 win over Besiktas in the Champions League qualifier last night.

Spurs' manager Mauricio Pochettino has said he is open to making more signing before the window closes on Monday, and reports suggest that his next addition could be Welbeck. Defender Federico Fazio was signed from Sevilla for £8m yesterday.

"We need to give balance to the squad," Pochettino said. "I don’t talk about names, never. I always say not to expect a lot of movement but it is possible that we add some players, yes."
