David De Gea to Real Madrid: Manchester United still undecided over goalkeeper's future before start of Premier League season

De Gea is seeking Real move and has only one year on his contract

Manchester United are undecided as to whether they will sell goalkeeper David De Gea to Real Madrid this summer, according to reports.

Just eight days remain before the start of the Premier League season.

De Gea has only one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, and has been heavily linked all summer with a move to Real Madrid.

The Manchester Evening News have reported that United face a dilemma over what to do with the Spanish goalkeeper. The club had maintained that only a deal for Real defender Sergio Ramos would convince them to release De Gea, and Ramos signed a new deal with Real on Thursday.

United manager Louis van Gaal had said this week that the De Gea situation left him frustrated, and he hoped to get it resolved soon.

"We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea, neither for us and neither for the club that, maybe, he wants to go," Van Gaal said.

United legend Peter Schemichel has urged De Gea to make a decision over his future before the start of the season on 8 August.

"He has arguably been [the club's] best player in the last two years, so he’s an important part of Manchester United," Schmeichel, 51, said.

"But if he wants to go back to Madrid - which I can understand and I wouldn’t blame him for doing that - then go back and let Manchester United move on."

De Gea has been at United since 2011, after signing from Atletico Madrid for £18m. He was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's side who won the Premier League title in 2013.
