David Luiz is on his way to Paris St-Germain from Chelsea, prompting the Brazil defender to tweet: “Tks CFC for this time of great partnership. I’m thankful for all! It’s a new challenge and together we’ll go even further. Allez Paris!”

The deal, which is thought to be costing PSG about £40 million, only hinged on the player agreeing personal terms, but that seemed to have been sorted out. The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Benfica for £21.3m in January 2011.

Another Brazilian on the move is Heurelho Gomes, who has finally escaped his Tottenham torture. The goalkeeper, who has not played for Spurs since November 2011, has joined Watford on a one-year contract with the Championship side having an option to keep the 33-year-old for a further year.

Gomes, who signed for Tottenham from the Dutch side PSV Eindhoven six years ago for a fee of just under £8 million, spent the second half of  last season playing for the German club Hoffenheim.

Roy Keane’s stint as assistant to the Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill could be about to end, with Celtic looking for a manager to replace Neil Lennon. Keane has shown no direct interest in the job, but nor has he ruled out a return to the club where he ended his playing career.

When asked about the opportunity the ITV pundit praised the Glasgow club but joked: “I’m not taking a pay cut for anybody.”

There is no question that his qualities are admired at Celtic – their owner Dermot Desmond was instrumental in forming Keane’s partnership with O’Neill.

Aston Villa have dismissed the assistant manager Ian Culverhouse after an inquiry that followed his suspension in April. The former Norwich  City player, who worked with Villa’s manager Paul Lambert at Norwich and at Colchester, had been suspended over off-field issues.

Villa have also sacked their head of football operations Gary Karsa, who was suspended in April  after he, too, faced allegations regarding off-field issues.
