Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has signed a two-year contract extension.

The new deal ties the Brazil international to the Premier League leaders until 2020.

Fernandinho, 32, joined City from Shakhtar Donetsk for £30m in June 2013 and has won the Premier League title and two League Cups during his time with the club.

He has made over 200 appearances for the club and has been a regular for Pep Guardiola this season, starting 22 games in the centre of City’s midfield.

Fernandinho, who has won 41 caps for Brazil, is also expected to feature for his country at the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer.

The midfielder, who was recently described by Guardiola as “one of the best three holding midfielders in the world”, told the club’s official website: “This is a club with a fantastic future and I want to be a part of it for as long as possible.

“With Pep in charge, I feel sure we can win significant silverware and, importantly, we will try to do it playing attractive, attacking football.

“It’s a pleasure to be a part of this club and I look forward to seeing what the next few years bring.”

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “We’re delighted Fernandinho has signed his new contract. He is a senior member of the squad and his professionalism and work ethic are second to none.

“His form has been fantastic this season and we’re happy he’s extended his deal for a further two years.”

City, who are now 12 points clear at the top of the table, resume the Premier League campaign at home to Newcastle on Saturday.

Next week, Guardiola's side host Sky Bet Championship Bristol City in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
