Jose Mourinho has hinted that Chelsea's pursuit of John Stones could be over after growing frustrated at Everton's rebuttals.

The Blues are understood to have made two bids for the England international, the latest of which was around £28m. Both were immediately rejected and Roberto Martinez has expressed his anger at Chelsea's public pursuit of the player.

The 21-year-old, whose situation is also thought to be being monitored by Manchester United, is understood to be keen on a switch to Chelsea.

However, Mourinho has hinted that the deal may not come to fruition.

“The market sometimes has no rules,” he told reporters.

“We, as Chelsea, we make our own rules.

“To make our own rules is to evaluate the players, and to know the players’ value, and to know when we have to stop and turn to another side, and think in another option.”

Stones is seen as an ideal long-term replacement for ageing captain John Terry.
