Liverpool announce Kostas Tsimikas signing from Olympiacos
The Premier League champions had been seeking cover for Andy Robertson
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos on a long-term contract.
The Reds have moved swiftly to bolster their ranks in the position, having had a bid rejected for Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis over the weekend.
A fee of around £11.75 million is expected to have been enough to land Tsimikas, who will wear the No. 21 shirt at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp had earmarked the position as one to strengthen in this summer, with no natural cover available for first-choice Andy Robertson.
Speaking to the club website upon signing, Tsimikas said he aimed to help win the Premier League again, as well as earn success in Europe.
“I’m very happy, I’m very proud to be here. For me, [it’s] the biggest club in the world. It’s an honour to be here and I will give my best,” Tsimikas said.
“The league here, I like a lot. I watch it on the TV and it was always one dream I had from when I was a kid to come to play in this league and to come through. With a lot of work and focus on what I do and what the coach wants, and every day working hard in training, I can be on the highest level.
“[I want] to achieve [our] goals. To win the league again and also to win the Champions League.”
Manager Klopp said Liverpool had watched Tsimikas for a “long time” before signing him and added he was a “very good footballer with an attitude to win and to compete, and I really like his mentality.”
Liverpool start their season on 29 August in the Community Shield, where they will face Arsenal at Wembley.
