SPECULATION:

20 August: Former Rangers defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos is close to completing a £1.5m move from AEK Athens to Liverpool.

19 August: Athletic Bilbao have issued a hands-off warning to any interested parties in Fernando Mardaras Amorebieta, after press reports linked the defender with a move to Liverpool.

19 August: Rafael Benitez is unlikely to approve any further sales of Liverpool players as his team struggles to cope with a growing injury list.

19 August: Hertha Berlin have confirmed their interest in re-signing Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin.

18 August: Liverpool's American owners are believed to be refusing to release funds for boss Rafael Benitez to buy a centre-back to ease the club's injury problems before the transfer window shuts.

18 August: Athletic Bilbao president Fernando Garcia Macua insists Liverpool have not made an offer for Fernando Amorebieta.

10 August: Barnsley have completed the permanent signing of winger Adam Hammill after agreeing "a significant six-figure deal" with Liverpool.

6 August: Liverpool closed in on the signing of Roma's Alberto Aquilani today with boss Rafael Benitez insisting the midfielder will "excite" the fans.

6 August: Arriving in a city famous for its left-wing, working-class culture, Alberto Aquilani will hope that one embarrassment in particular can be put behind him as quickly as possible. Last year Liverpool's new £20m signing admitted a grudging admiration for Italy's former fascist dictator Benito Mussolini which might yet take some explaining to his new fans.

5 August: While Alonso was completing his medical and signing a four-year contract at the Bernabeu, Liverpool were agreeing a fee for Roma's young midfield star Alberto Aquilani. The 25-year-old is currently heading to Merseyside and he will have a medical tomorrow.

5 August: Liverpool expect to close the deal for Roma's £17m midfielder Alberto Aquilani in the next week after finally agreeing to Xabi Alonso's £30m departure to Real Madrid yesterday. The contract for Aquiliani has been in place for some time and the move can now go ahead after weeks of brinkmanship over Alonso.

5 August: Steven Defour's agent has claimed the Standard Liège midfielder would not turn down the chance to join Liverpool if they came in for him.

4 August: Liverpool have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the transfer of midfielder Xabi Alonso. The fee is believed to be £30m and the deal is now subject to Alonso passing a medical.

3 August: Manchester United and Liverpool are poised to go to war over Valencia hotshot David Villa. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is determined to snap up Villa once Xabi Alonso completes his move to Real Madrid but he faces stiff competition from his fierce rival, Sir Alex Ferguson.

3 August: Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is keen for his future to be sorted out one way or the other as the long-running transfer saga regarding a possible move to Real Madrid continues to drag on. Alonso has been linked with Madrid for most of the summer but the Spanish giants have so far been unwilling to meet Liverpool's asking price for the Euro 2008 winner, which is believed to be in the region of £30m.

3 August: Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has reiterated he does not want to lose Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.

31 July: The Roma and Italy midfielder Alberto Aquilani is Liverpool's primary target as the departure of Xabi Alonso became ever more inevitable yesterday. The Spanish midfielder raised the stakes in his battle to leave the club by formally requesting a transfer to Real Madrid, who have pursued him all summer.

31 July: Xabi Alonso's formal transfer request will bring to a head the summer-long saga over his football future. The Liverpool midfielder returned to training from a three-day break in his home city of San Sebastian yesterday to put his demand to leave Anfield in writing.

29 July: Liverpool have announced that they have agreed a fee for full-back Alvaro Arbeloa to join Real Madrid.

29 July: Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has told Xabi Alonso to make a decision once and for all on his Anfield future in the next 48 hours.

28 July: So who's in, who's out – and what will your club do next?

28 July: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claims he is ready to walk away from deals this summer if asking prices remain high. Liverpool are reported to want £30m for Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso, substantially above Real's valuation.

28 July: Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa says he is close to sealing a transfer to Real Madrid even though the big-spending Spanish side seem more concerned with trimming their squad after an extravagant close-season spending spree.

27 July: Andrea Dossena's agent claims the Liverpool defender is eager to sign for Napoli and that the two clubs are in negotiations.

24 July: The Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez is ready to intensify his interest in Valencia's David Silva, his negotiating position enhanced by the Spanish club's diminishing prospects of selling their other prime asset, David Villa.

23 July: Liverpool have dismissed claims today that a fee has been agreed with Real Madrid for the sale of Xabi Alonso. Suggestions the Spanish international would not be travelling on to the second part of the club's Far East tour were also allayed by the 28-year-old's involvement today in training at Singapore's national stadium.

22 July: Real Madrid head coach Manuel Pellegrini has admitted that he would like to bring Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso to the Bernabeu. The 27-year-old Spain international is a rumoured £30m target for Real, although Pellegrini has refused to talk too much about former Real Sociedad schemer Alonso.

14 July: Liverpool's new £17m full-back Glen Johnson will make his Liverpool debut in Switzerland tomorrow with boss Rafael Benitez insisting he is worth the money.

14 July: Xabi Alonso seemed to be heading out of Anfield last night, after what appeared to be a a joint effort between the midfielder and Real Madrid to manufacture his much craved move to the Bernabeu.

8 July: Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, looks to have won his battle to keep Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid's sporting director Jorge Valdano suggested the club were being priced out of signing the Spain international midfielder.

7 July: Real Madrid are believed to want any move for Liverpool's Xabi Alonso sorted out in the next fortnight. The Spanish giants, who have yet to make an official bid for the midfielder, have set a time limit on their interest, according to sources close to the Bernabeu club.

5 July: The IoS transfer-merry go-round: a comprehensive list of players linked in the past week to your club; plus those who have signed on the dotted line.

2 July: Barcelona are set to launch a £25m bid for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, according to reports today. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been resolute in his desire to hold on to the Argentina international, but reports from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportiva allege he had given Barcelona permission to make an offer.

1 July: Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli insists the Serie A giants are not interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.
